TRAining programmes to INcrease Energy-efficiency by Railways

Aim of the project was to improve energy efficiency by railway companies through the promotion of energy efficient driving of trains from train drivers (passenger & freight) and the implementation of energy saving measures oriented to station personnel and railway managers.In the framework of the project CRES collaborated with the Hellenic Railway Organisation (OSE) which participated –among several European railway companies-in the project.

CRES prepared an inventory of best energy efficiency practices in the railways and developed relevant educational material for train drivers and railway managers. This material contained educational seminars on both theoretical and practical level using educational presentations, DVDs and other informational material which was developed for the project.

Project results:
In order to monitor the results of the implementation of energy efficient driving for train drivers during the project, CRES and OSE measured in a pilot basis the consumption of electricity in a small amount of suburban trains in the route “Neraziotissa-El.Venizelos” using special measuring devices.

The application of economical driving from train drivers resulted an average 15% reduction in electricity.
