Haris Kambezidis was born in Athens in 1952. He holds degrees in physics, electrical engineering and has a doctorate in physics. He did postgraduate studies in England and postdoctoral work in Germany. He has worked at the National Observatory of Athens since 1981 and today he is Director of Research. In 1992, he founded the Atmospheric Research Group at the National Observatory conducting research in areas such as atmospheric environment (atmospheric pollution, atmospheric haziness, waste gases in the atmosphere) and renewable energy sources (solar radiation). He was president of the Union of Greek Physicists (1999-2000) and was the first president (2003-2006) and founding member of the Greek Lighting Committee.
